William HUGGINS, son of William HUGGINS ( - ) and Martha UNKNOWN ( - ), was born circa 1777 in North Lopham and was baptised there on 16th May 1779. He enlisted on 17th July 1795 - 22nd (Light) Dragoon Guards. During his military service he had the ranks of (in order) Private, 14 years 67 days, Corporal, 2 years 281 days, Sergeant, 7 years 138 days, Sergeant Major, 302 days. From 17th November 1796 to 6th July 1820 William served in the East Indies. He was wounded in the hip at Mallavilly Plain in the Mandya district of Karnataka, India on 17th March 1799. William was discharged on 24th July 1820 - reason: “in consequence of the disbandment of the Regiment”. William died on 18th November 1849 in North Lopham and was buried there on 21st November 1849.
